What Is Trichomoniasis?

Trichomoniasis (trich) is a parasitic STD caused by Trichomonas vaginalis. It is the most common curable STD.

Symptoms

  • Women: frothy yellow-green discharge, vaginal itching, odor, painful urination
  • Men: usually no symptoms; may have penile discharge or burning
  • 70% of infected people have NO symptoms

Complications

  • Increased HIV transmission risk
  • Pregnancy complications (preterm birth)

Testing

  • NAAT (urine or vaginal swab)
  • Results in 1–3 days

Treatment

  • Single 2-gram dose of metronidazole or tinidazole
  • Partner(s) must be treated simultaneously
  • Avoid alcohol for 24–72 hours after treatment
