What Is Trichomoniasis?
Trichomoniasis (trich) is a parasitic STD caused by Trichomonas vaginalis. It is the most common curable STD.
Symptoms
- Women: frothy yellow-green discharge, vaginal itching, odor, painful urination
- Men: usually no symptoms; may have penile discharge or burning
- 70% of infected people have NO symptoms
Complications
- Increased HIV transmission risk
- Pregnancy complications (preterm birth)
Testing
- NAAT (urine or vaginal swab)
- Results in 1–3 days
Treatment
- Single 2-gram dose of metronidazole or tinidazole
- Partner(s) must be treated simultaneously
- Avoid alcohol for 24–72 hours after treatment
