What Is Chlamydia?

Chlamydia is a bacterial infection caused by Chlamydia trachomatis. It is the most commonly reported STD in the U.S.

Transmission

  • Vaginal, anal, or oral sex
  • Can be transmitted to newborn during delivery

Symptoms

  • Women: 70–80% have NO symptoms
  • Men: 50% have no symptoms
  • When present: discharge, burning with urination, pelvic/testicular pain

Complications

  • PID (pelvic inflammatory disease) in women
  • Infertility
  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Chronic pelvic pain

Testing

  • Urine NAAT test (most common)
  • Vaginal swab
  • Results in 1–3 days

Treatment

  • Azithromycin (single dose) or doxycycline (7 days)
  • Partner(s) must also be treated
  • Re-test in 3 months
