What Is Chlamydia?
Chlamydia is a bacterial infection caused by Chlamydia trachomatis. It is the most commonly reported STD in the U.S.
Transmission
- Vaginal, anal, or oral sex
- Can be transmitted to newborn during delivery
Symptoms
- Women: 70–80% have NO symptoms
- Men: 50% have no symptoms
- When present: discharge, burning with urination, pelvic/testicular pain
Complications
- PID (pelvic inflammatory disease) in women
- Infertility
- Ectopic pregnancy
- Chronic pelvic pain
Testing
- Urine NAAT test (most common)
- Vaginal swab
- Results in 1–3 days
Treatment
- Azithromycin (single dose) or doxycycline (7 days)
- Partner(s) must also be treated
- Re-test in 3 months
