How to Check for Chlamydia

Chlamydia testing is simple and painless.

Testing Methods

  • Urine test (NAAT): most common — pee in a cup, no swab needed
  • Vaginal swab: self-collected or provider-collected
  • Urethral swab: less common now

How It Works

  • NAAT (nucleic acid amplification test) detects chlamydia DNA
  • Most accurate test available
  • Results in 1–3 days

When to Test

  • 1–2 weeks after potential exposure
  • Annually if under 25 and sexually active
  • Before starting a new relationship
  • If any symptoms appear
