What Is Mean Platelet Volume (MPV)?
MPV measures the average size of platelets. Larger platelets are younger and more clot-active.
Normal Range
- 7.5–11.5 fL
High MPV
- Increased platelet destruction (ITP)
- Recent surgery
- Cardiovascular risk
- Hyperthyroidism
Low MPV
- Bone marrow suppression
- Chemotherapy
- Aplastic anemia
Clinical Use
- Interpret with platelet count
- High MPV + low count = marrow compensating
- Low MPV + low count = production failure
