What Is Mean Platelet Volume (MPV)?

MPV measures the average size of platelets. Larger platelets are younger and more clot-active.

Normal Range

  • 7.5–11.5 fL

High MPV

  • Increased platelet destruction (ITP)
  • Recent surgery
  • Cardiovascular risk
  • Hyperthyroidism

Low MPV

  • Bone marrow suppression
  • Chemotherapy
  • Aplastic anemia

Clinical Use

  • Interpret with platelet count
  • High MPV + low count = marrow compensating
  • Low MPV + low count = production failure
