What Is MCHC in a Blood Test?
MCHC stands for Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin Concentration. It measures the average amount of hemoglobin inside your red blood cells relative to their size. Hemoglobin is the protein that carries oxygen throughout your body.
Normal Ranges
- Adult normal range: 32–36 g/dL
- Values below 32 g/dL may indicate hypochromic anemia (pale red blood cells), often caused by iron deficiency, chronic disease, or thalassemia.
- Values above 36 g/dL are uncommon but can appear in hereditary spherocytosis or severe burns where red blood cells lose water and become concentrated.
What Causes Low MCHC?
- Iron deficiency anemia — most common; insufficient iron limits hemoglobin production
- Thalassemia — a genetic condition affecting hemoglobin chains
- Chronic inflammatory disease — conditions like rheumatoid arthritis can suppress red blood cell production
- Lead poisoning — interferes with heme synthesis
How Are Abnormal MCHC Results Followed Up?
Your healthcare provider will typically look at MCHC alongside MCV (cell size) and MCH (hemoglobin per cell) to classify anemia. Additional tests may include iron studies (ferritin, TIBC) and a peripheral blood smear. MCHC alone does not provide a diagnosis — it is part of the Complete Blood Count (CBC) panel interpreted as a whole.
