What Is HDL Cholesterol?
HDL stands for High-Density Lipoprotein. It is called the 'good' cholesterol because it removes excess cholesterol from artery walls and transports it to the liver for disposal.
Optimal Levels
- Men: above 40 mg/dL
- Women: above 50 mg/dL
- Above 60 mg/dL: protective
- Below 40 (men) or 50 (women) = cardiovascular risk factor
How to Raise HDL
- Exercise — the most effective natural method
- Quit smoking — raises HDL within weeks
- Healthy fats — olive oil, fatty fish, nuts
- Moderate alcohol — may raise HDL (but not recommended for non-drinkers)
- Lose excess weight
