What Does Low Platelet Count Mean?

Low platelets (thrombocytopenia) means reduced clotting ability and increased bleeding risk.

Severity

• 100,000–150,000: mild
• 50,000–100,000: moderate
• Below 50,000: bleeding risk
• Below 20,000: spontaneous bleeding

Common Causes

• Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP)
• Medications (heparin, certain antibiotics)
• Liver disease with enlarged spleen
• Alcohol use
• Viral infection
• Pregnancy (gestational)

Symptoms

• Easy bruising
• Petechiae (small red dots on skin)
• Nosebleeds
• Prolonged bleeding from cuts
• Blood in urine or stool
